Calgary Stampede Day 1.

July 3, 2009
I am so excited to report on the horses, cowboys and agricultural events at this year's Calgary Stampede.

I am so excited to report on the horses, cowboys and agricultural events at this year's Calgary Stampede.

After weeks upon weeks of anticipation I am here! I arrived yesterday morning in Calgary for two weeks enjoying an internship with the famous Calgary Stampede.  Beginning today, I am part of the agriculture media committee writing stories and news releases!

Tomorrow is the big openning day!  Today I spent time meeting the agriculture media committee with whom I”ll be working as well as getting my footing of the Stampede and its park — not an easy task with dozens of buildings, arenas and events.  The agriculture media committee is a talented group of volunteers who coordinate the promotion of stories related to agricultural events at the Stampede.  The majority of the committee members are marketing or communications professionals.  They spend all year organizing and preparing for these exciting ten days.  I was blown away today by how many volunteers pull the Calgary Stampede together.  Tonight at an afterwork fundraising event in a nearby bar a major volunteer said it best: (paraphrased) “The Calgary Stampede is a multi-million dollar event with more than 100 000 people on the grounds everday day.  It is a HUGE wheel and it takes alot to keep everything moving.”

Did you know that because roughly 100 000 people attend the Stampede everday it is the third largest city in Alberta for ten days?  Unreal isn’t it!

I am confident this internship will be a fabulous learning experience.  I am doing work I love, surrounded by talented and fun-loving hosts.

Grab your collared shirts, jeans and boots — which is literally the dress code for everyone in Calgary as soon as Stampede season hits — it’s time to take in the Calgary Stampede!
